One of our most unusual projects was at Langstone Harbour near Portsmouth, where our archaeologists worked for seven years in deep mud and treacherous tides. The work was important as the small islands within Langstone Harbour are eroding rapidly and the remains had to be recorded and interpreted before the sea washed them away forever. The unusual conditions made things easier as well as harder: many flints and pieces of pottery were found on the foreshore as erosion of the islands by the sea exposed them.
Their work completely rewrote the history of the area. They showed for the first time that Langstone was not a harbour at all in prehistoric times, but an area of open grassland and woods where people came to collect flint for making into tools, to hunt animals and to graze sheep and cattle. By the Iron Age BC the sea began gradually seeping in and this allowed people to make salt and farm oysters.

You get what you pay in Bateson but overall I was very happy. The people are awesome, you make a lot of friends. It’s very humble but it’s alright. Good WiFi. Lived with cockroaches. Horrible place. No safety as name of building is printed on swipe card. Cleaners were friendly. Lots of noise and drugs often used. Great location, but about as good as your expect for the price. Does the job for a yeah though.
Prison cells. Theyre very small and need to be redone to be more student friendly.

By Sophie Curtis For Mailonline. The first ever example of fossilised plant gum, dating back million years, has been discovered by a British PhD student. Emily Roberts, from the University of Portsmouth, made the find while examining fossilised leaves of the welwitschiophyllum plant, found in the Crato formation in Brazil. She believes that scientists may have overlooked similar fossils because they resemble amber.
Plants produce resins such as amber when wounded to act as a defence against disease and insects, while gums are involved in food storage and structural support.

The Diabetes UK report ‘improving the delivery of adult diabetes care through integration’ shares key lessons for commissioners and providers to overcome barriers and improve the delivery of diabetes care in their area.
Portsmouth is included as a case study in that report. For a full explanation of how an integrated model of diabetes care should look please download the report. This was to address the fact that the rate of referral from primary to specialist care was much higher than discharge from specialist care and people were increasingly seen for follow up appointments in specialist care, causing an increase in waiting lists from six to 18 months over a ten year period.
The model of care designed to address this defines who does what within the system and is widely known as the ‘super six’. The ‘super six’ are the areas of diabetes care that it was agreed must be managed by consultant specialists in hospital for the purpose of commissioning services. The model of care is based in an increased role for primary care in the delivery of diabetes care. This is supported by the introduction of specialist community based teams, with consultant input, and improved access to professional education and support.
The community team provides triage for specialist care referrals and provides 24hour advice for GPs to support their management of diabetes. The main drive behind this redesign was to define roles to increase the ability of primary care to deliver diabetes care, and provide rapid access to specialist care as needed.
This is an ongoing process of improvement, and the next steps in the redesign are to reduce the amputation rates in Fareham and Gosport and achieve consistency in the delivery of the 15 healthcare essentials in primary care.
